Opening of the 2012-2013 academic year: The art of networking
Press release 30 August 2012
Maastricht University will open the academic year 2012-2013 on Monday, 3 September with a full program that centres both on renewal and tradition. The theme of the program is 'the Art of Networking'. Networking plays a key role in the new strategic program. Collaboration within the university, the region and worldwide with partner universities, companies and government institutions increasingly leads to all kinds of innovative projects and activities. All of these projects will be presented during the morning symposium.
Morning symposium
First up in the morning symposium will be the introduction of the Strategic Program 2012-2016 and the three key research focus areas. The theme 'The art of networking' will then take centre stage during the program item "Maastricht University Plaza'. There will be presentations from approximately 50 projects, initiatives and partnerships that are affiliated to the UM in the hall and corridors and, weather permitting, also in the courtyard. The objective is that a cross-pollination between all of these projects takes places and that visitors are given a broad insight into the activities of the university and its various partners. After this, the presidents of the youth organizations of the various political parties will be debating with each other and the audience on the role of higher education and internationalization. The closing lunch will once again provide an opportunity to network on 'Plaza'.

Official opening
The official part of the opening of the academic year takes place in the Theatre on the Vrijthof. Professor Dr. Frans van Vught, former rector of the University of Twente and internationally respected expert in the area of higher education and international collaboration, is the main guest.
Mastreechter Staar will perform the music for the academic ceremony this year. The Royal Choir Society Mastreechter Staar is one of the oldest male choirs in The Netherlands. They are always happy to have young members and gladly invite male students to come and join the choir.

Staying true to tradition, a number of awards will be presented during the opening:
• the Edmond Hustinx prize for science for a promising young researcher
• the Student award for a student or a group of students, who in addition to his or her study, has/have distinguished themselves socially or culturally.
• The Rabobank Doctoral Dissertation Award.

Finally, the Mastreechter Staar will perform 'Ode to Joy, the European Anthem' from the 9th symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven, for the official opening of the academic year.
